This is the Peel Session recorded in 1997 by Olivia Tremor Control, best post-Beatles pop band ever. Period. They were from Athens, Georgia, USA. They split in 99. If you don't know them, I recommand you give a listen to their two absolutly gorgeous LPs, Dusk at Cubist Castle and Black Foliage.

The Left Banke, left aside

Laissés de côté, oubliés, enterrés vivants... c'est le triste sort qui fut celui des membres de The Left Banke, combo de pop baroque formé en 1967 du côté de New York par le fils d'un pianiste classique. Bluffés par la pop des Beatles qui fait un malheur aux Etats-Unis à l'époque, Mike Lookofsky (plus tard Mike Brown, 2e à gauche en photo) et ses potes décident de faire un disque eux aussi, mais en se souvenant des leçons de jeunesse de piano classique. Quelques 45t et un album sortiront, recueillant un succès d'estime certain, mais dans un marché de la pop trusté alors par les Fab Four et les Beach Boys (voire les Zombies), il ne reste que peu de place pour les Left Banke. Le groupe néglige les tournées, vend peu, et se sépare en 69.

Une existence éclair, des beaux garçons romantiques et maudits, un nom tombé dans les oubliettes du rock, mais quelques petites chansons merveilleuses laissées en héritage... La légende est née.

Debbie Harry fait sa toilette

Bien avant de devenir une icône de la scène punk de New York, Debbie Harry est passée par une période un peu moins avouable. A la fin des années 60, elle est en effet choriste dans une mauvaise formation folk rock, The Wind In The Willows. Plus Brunie que Blondie à l'époque, elle n'assure le lead vocal que sur un seul morceau de l'unique album du groupe. Voici cette chanson; plutôt surprenant d'entendre sa voix sur des arrangements façon flower power (des flutes quand-même !)...

I have posted him already, but he is worth it. Dan Deacon is a mad geek and a strong musical personnality as well. He particularly loves to mix Bach style harmonies with overdriven digital keyboards and Chip and Dale voices. His concerts are crazy shows where he stands in the middle of the crowd equipped only with a table covered with electronic devices, effects pedals, and toys. The track proposed here is pretty slow and contemplative for its first part, but it then joyfully shifts into a running cavalery of broken-up voices, to end up suddenly with the main theme again.

Trinité is an electronic trio from Paris and features members of Turzi, Chicros, Kill For Total Peace or One Switch to Collision. Using only a Tenori-on, vintage analog keyboards and oscillators (sometimes a string instrument), they like to build long electronic improvisations around a simple synthesizer phrase.

Two very different visions for an equal listening pleasure. Try them.
